BABY BOY GIFTS
Purchasing a baby boy gift for either your own
son, grandson, family member or friend can be a challenge. Depending on the age,
interest, and popularity of an item, finding the right baby boy gift is not
always easy! I have been to enough baby showers and first birthdays where there
is a popular gift that was purchased by three different people at the baby
shower and birthday. The funny thing was that all three baby boy gifts were not
even of interest to my friend's son and all were returned. I will go over some
processes and ideas for
baby boy gifts that you will hopefully find useful in
picking out the perfect baby boy gift and making that little person a happy boy!

Process of Finding the Right Baby Boy Gift
When you find out you will be purchasing a gift for the baby boy in your life,
you now have the task of finding the right gift! The following are helpful
guidelines to use in finding that special baby boy gift:
1) Leave yourself time: The day you find out or know you need to purchase a gift
in the future, it is important to give yourself enough time to purchase and wrap
that gift. Don't wait until the last second as you may be frantically looking
for a random gift or the "right" gift that is sold out in stores. Always error
on the side of having more time and getting your shopping done early as you may
have some investigative work to do in finding the right baby boy gift unique to
that little person :) There are a lot of ways to shop, whether you are
purchasing the baby boy gift online or at a store/mall. Again, just make sure
you have the time to complete and wrap the gift.
2) Investigate for the right gift: The easiest way to find out what to get the
baby boy is to ask him yourself if you are his parents or family member. Friends
can ask the mommy or daddy as they should know what their baby boy has as
interests and hobbies. It can be from what they watch on TV to what they collect
or focus on. My brother's baby boy loves space and has just about everything you
could imagine. During his fourth birthday, half of the gifts that were given to
them had to be returned since they already had the toys, books and space items.
Again, asking the parents in what the baby boy does not have is always the
safest bet and you will be getting them something they really want.
3) If you are the baby boy's parent or family member, just ask him what he would
like: A great way is to get the catalogs that we all get in the mail or
newspaper and to bookmark the pages that your son points out to you. Then you
can make a list for others in what your baby boy wants and distribute it to
friends and family. That way, you know you are getting things that your little
one will enjoy whether it is for their birthday, holiday season or just because.

4) Pay attention when visiting the baby boy's house: Next time you are at the
home of the baby boy you need a gift for, check out the following to choose the
right baby boy gift:
What videos does the baby boy watch?
Is there a chosen theme of his room that he picked and
enjoys (e.g., fireman, sports, dinosaurs, space, western,
military)?
What types of toys does the baby boy like to play with
(e.g., plastic figures vs. musical instruments)?
What books does the baby boy enjoy reading?
Does the baby boy like to be challenged with puzzles or
with gross motor skills such as hitting a ball?
What does the baby boy already have as for toys, books,
puzzles as you may want to get them something of interest
but unique.
The more information you get, the more you can make an
educated guess on the best baby boy gift for your special
little guy.
5) Safety Issue: When purchasing any baby boy gift,
make sure it is something in the right age group of the little one you are
purchasing for. Almost every toy has the age group listed on the box as you need
to make sure it is not going to be a safety hazard (i.e., chocking on a little
piece of plastic for smaller boys). At the same time, you want to make sure you
are getting a toy that is challenging for the person you are purchasing the toy
for. It is a great idea to look up on the site for any baby gift recalls at
http://www.cpsc.gov/. Again, make sure the gift you are getting has not recently
been recalled due to a defect as it happens all the time.
6) Noise/Piece/Packaging Level: Unless you really want to put one on your friend
or family member, try and be respectful of how noisy or how many pieces consists
of the baby boy's gift. My son was given a 1000 piece tinker toy set and the
first night I had to help him clean up 1000 pieces (cleaning took longer than
the playing). Although many baby boy gifts may have sound ranges (usually two-
medium or loud) if they have sound at all. Just make sure that any baby boy gift
that does make sound is something that shuts off easily and is not too annoying.
Purchasing drums, loud instruments, or fire engines with blaring sirens should
be approved by the parents first. If you are the parent, you may want to think
of these things before the purchase :) Another new issue is the packaging of
gifts. You may want to take a look at seeing if you need three different types
of screwdrivers just to get the baby boy gift out of the package. Recently, I
spent over three hours putting together my baby boy's present from his 3rd
birthday which also took help.
7) Age Group: An important factor in the purchase of a baby boy gift is how old
the child is. I have seen so many parties and holidays when the baby boy
receives something for someone much older or younger than they are. My son
received a toy for a seven year old at four. In most cases, there is a reason
why the makers place age of use on the packaging. Sometimes it is a safety issue
while other times it is a patience and learning issue. Nothing is more
frustrating for a baby boy to get a gift and want to play with it, finding out
it is too difficult for them to master. Although, working through frustration is
good for kids, there is a point when it is too frustrating and can affect their
temporary confidence.
8) Seasonal Baby Boy Gifts: When it is cold winter, it is probably not a great
idea to get a baby boy gift that is an outside toy (unless fitting for the
season). For instance, a remote control airplane for the outside is not good for
someone in Chicago in the winter when it is below zero. Remember that most kids
want to open and play with their gift (if it is a toy) right away. Just play
attention to the season you are in or going into and you will have a happy baby
boy.
9) Clothing Not Always Best: Clothing is a hit and miss baby boy gift. At times,
it can work out if you know what to get the baby boy but many times the parents
are then obligated to return and take back the clothing. Remember that all of
our tastes are different so what you may think is cute may not be liked by the
parents of the baby boy. The important thing with clothing is to know who the
child is as well as to ask the parents on what would be best for clothing (if
you are wanting to purchase clothing for the baby boy). That way, you can't go
wrong other than the size :)
