 We all want the best for our baby boy. Within the
first years of life, sleep is one of the most precious things to both the baby

Baby Bedding Safety

and reduce the threat of SIDS, it is important remove all soft, loose and fluffy
baby bedding. Debra states to make sure and remove pillows, quilts, comforters,
bumper pads, sheepskins, stuffed toys and other soft products if the baby boy is

She also states to never place baby on a waterbed, sofa, soft mattress, pillow
or other soft surface to sleep. In recent years, pediatricians have recommended
to place your baby boy on his back to sleep at night and nap time. By the
studies, placing your baby boy on his back (if one year old or less) can reduce
the likelihood of SIDS.
With baby boys older than one, there are still
precautions to be aware of. Most baby boy bedding and baby boy sheets today are
created to be made of more non-flammable materials but it is always important to
check the labels to be on the safe side. Make sure there is no way for the baby
to be caught in between bed and wall or in between headboards, footboards or bed
frames. Check out the baby bedding, mattress, crib or bed to make sure if the

Make
sure you are using a certified and approved modern crib.
Many people may want to give you a hand-me-down crib and
bedding which is great as long as it is in good shape
and fairly new. It is always wise to provide a new
mattress for each child since they wear down.

Closely
review the crib to make sure it does not have any loose
or missing parts/pieces.

Make
sure the mattress is tight fitting with as little space
as possible between the railing and mattress.

As cozy
as you want your baby boy, make sure the mattress is not
too soft.

The
space between each rail should be less than 2 3/8
inches.
Comfort -
Choosing the right comfort factor for your baby boy bedding is not as easy as it
is for yourself. As parents, we have experience in what right bedding is for us.
Part of what makes great baby boy bedding is to have soft sheets that are easy
to get on and off the bed. You also may want durable bedding in addition to soft
"baby approved" cotton top over a waterproof bottom which is important,
especially if your baby boy is not potty trained at night or for his naps. A
great way is to take your baby boy to a mattress place or baby store that has
displays and have him try out the bedding there (if he is old enough to talk).

Washing/Care -
When purchasing any baby boy bedding, pillow case covers, etc, there should be
labels instructing what you need to do for washing care instructions. Typically,
bedding is washable on a cold-water setting. You can tumble dry on low or medium
settings and use a cool iron if necessary.
If you have a down pillow and comforter (with
older baby boys) we recommend that you protect your comforter from dust/dirt and
wear with a Comforter or Duvet cover. A down comforter and pillow should be
aired as often as possible. Leave the comforter and/or pillow outside in a
shaded area on a sunny warm day so moisture in the down has a chance to
evaporate. Shake the comforter and/or pillow daily to help the down stay fluffy.
If there is only a small spot that needs washing, the spot can be washed with a
wet rag. If it is necessary to wash your comforter and/or pillow, then choose a
frontloading washing machine that has a large capacity while washing in warm
water on delicate cycle.
